Intermas Aquaculture is committed to offering solutions for the cultivation of algae, specifically the Kappahycus and Gracilaria sp. These solutions together with compostable meshes allow the development and protection of marine ecosystems and algae to promote Blue Carbon.

What is Blue Carbon or Blue Carbon and how does it help us fight climate change?

Climate change generated in part by the action of man and energy consumption implies the creation and concentration in the atmosphere of the main greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (Co2), and puts the existing natural balance in the environment at risk.. Although the greenhouse effect is necessary for life to exist while maintaining temperatures that allow it to live, the concentration of these gases has harmful repercussions for the planet.

But the marine ecosystem has much to contribute to reduce the presence of CO2. The mangroves, marshes and seagrasses, in short, the algae of this ecosystem, thanks to their photosynthesis process, are capable of absorbing the CO2 present in the water, and release oxygen that remains dissolved in the water or passes into the atmosphere. This process is called Blue Carbon or blue carbon, since it is in the seas where carbon absorption takes place.

In addition to capturing CO2 much faster than on land, they also do it for much longer. In fact, these are ecosystems that are not subject to the danger of fires, which allows them to remain in this state for thousands of years in the right conditions.

Blue carbon is just one of the benefits of these marine ecosystems, as they also protect against storms, tides, coastal erosion, regulate water quality, filter pollutants into the water, and create a habitat for ecosystem.

This is why the protection of these underwater forests is essential to combat climate change, although they often go unnoticed as it is an ecosystem that is not visible to most people.
