Biodiversity World Day, Oysters a key species

NOT TRADE FAIRS  Aquaculture

Oysters are a key species, as they play a fundamental role in maintaining biodiversity in the ecosystem and in the cycle and cleaning of water. Oysters are a natural solution to water pollution.

Did you know that an oyster filters 190 liters of water a day and 4,000 m2 of oyster reef (0.40h) filter about 36 Olympic swimming pools of water a day?

Oysters are amazing filter feeders. They eat by pumping large volumes of water through their body. Removing algae and nutrients, making the water clearer, allowing the best growth and development for seagrasses and other marine life. Today its cultivation in Poches; OysterBasket; Oyster Bags is helping the environment, contributing to a blue economy.  In addition to these benefits of filtering water, they are an important part of the economy of their production areas. Farmed oysters, cultivated in Poches (Oyster bags) or baskets can release millions of eggs each year. Oyster larvae disperse and colonize nearby areas. In this way, oyster farms can help establish and supplement wild oyster populations.

Oyster growing has a positive impact, restoring the balance of the ecosystem, absorbing CO2 and acting as a natural biofilter.
